Instructions for Submitting a Letter of Intent

Investigators are required to submit Letters of Intent using the online grant submission. Mailed applications for the Letter of Intent will not be reviewed. Applications must be in English. Once you click “Begin Online Application” at the Goldhirsh Foundation website, you will create your own personal account. After creating a login (your email address and password), please use “Continue Online Application” to make any edits as needed. No changes can be made to your application after you “SUBMIT” your application. The final version must be submitted online by 12:00 noon, Eastern Standard Time (GMT-5) on Wednesday, January 16, 2008.

To complete the online application, the following is required:

1. Eligibility Quiz

2. Applicant Information: Principal Investigator contact and educational background information

3. Project Information: Project Title, Keywords, Project Summary, Non-technical Summary, Institution and Institutional Officer information

4. Attachments: The following documents are required for upload:

  • Letter of Intent (No more than two pages excluding references cited): Include at the top of each page, the Principal Investigator's full name followed by degree(s). Proper capitalization (e.g. Jane Smith, M.D., Ph.D.) is required for all contact information. The Letter of Intent (LOI) should briefly describe the project (its specific aims, research design, and methods), and how the project contributes to malignant diffuse glioma tumor research. The Investigator should highlight the aspects of his/her project that are new approaches in this field. Investigators who have already submitted two versions of an application to the Goldhirsh Foundation and have not been funded may submit again as long as all sections of the proposal have substantially changed. Include in the Letter of Intent a brief explanation that clarifies the differences between the new submission and the prior submissions. The minimum font size is 11 with single spacing within paragraphs and double spacing between paragraphs; margins must be one inch on all four sides.
  • Biographical Sketch of Principal Investigator (not to exceed four pages): The investigator may use the National Institutes of Health R01 PHS 398 Biographical Sketch form. Include name, position title, education/training, positions/honors and selected peer-reviewed publications in chronological order. List ongoing or completed (within the last three years) research projects (federal and non-federal support). Begin with the projects that are most relevant to the research proposal in this application. Briefly indicate the overall goals of these projects and your responsibilities.

Investigators who are invited to submit full proposals will be sent detailed application instructions. In brief, the full proposal application includes a letter from the Department or Division Head, Budget, Budget Justification and research proposal (maximum of 10 pages).
