Application Instructions for Initial Proposal

The complete application must be submitted by Thursday, January 7, 2010, 12:00 Noon, U.S. and Canada Eastern Time (GMT-5)

To complete the online application, the following is required:

1. Eligibility Questionnaire

2. Application Fields: Principal Investigator contact and educational background information, Project Title, Project Type, Key Words, Primary Institution to conduct the Proposed Research, and Scientific and Non-Technical Project Summaries. .

3. Attachment: The two documents listed below must be combined and converted into ONE PDF file for upload. This document must be named LastName, FirstName.pdf (for example, Smith, Jane.pdf)

    A. Biographical Sketch of Principal Investigator (not to exceed four pages): The R01 PHS 398 Biographical Sketch form may be used. Include name, position title, education/training, positions/honors and selected publications in chronological order. List publications in the following categories: a) peer-reviewed articles, b) non peer-reviewed articles such as reviews and book chapters, and c) abstracts within the last two years. Citations should include all authors, year, title, journal, volume and inclusive pagination. Relevant Collaborator(s) Biographical Sketch may be included.

    List ongoing, completed (within the last three years) and pending research projects (public, or U.S. federal, and foundation or other private support). Begin with the projects that are most relevant to the research proposed in this application. Briefly indicate the overall goals of these projects and the Applicant’s responsibilities.

    B. Initial Proposal (Maximum of two pages excluding references cited): Outline succinctly the nature of your proposed project and its relevance to the treatment of malignant diffuse glioma tumors. The Investigator should highlight the aspects of his/her project that are new approaches in this field. The four sections below must be clearly stated in the Initial Application:

    • Specific Aims
    • Background and Significance
    • Research Design and Methods
    • How the project contributes to malignant diffuse glioma tumor research

    Format: Include at the top of each page, the Principal Investigator's full name followed by degree(s). The minimum font size is 11 with single spacing within paragraphs and double spacing between paragraphs; margins must be one inch on all four sides. Proper capitalization (e.g. Jane Smith, M.D., Ph.D.) is required for all contact information. Application must be in English.

    Resubmission Note: Investigators who have already submitted two versions of an application to the Goldhirsh Foundation and have not been funded may submit again as long as all sections of the proposal have substantially changed. Include in the Initial Proposal Application a brief explanation that clarifies the differences between the new submission and prior submissions.
