The Goldhirsh Foundation was established by Bernard A. Goldhirsh in 2000, shortly after he was diagnosed with brain cancer. Since his death in 2003, the Board of Directors of the Foundation (which includes his two children) has been shaping a grantmaking program that reflects his values and entrepreneurial spirit. We are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of people touched by the organizations and projects we support.
A significant portion of the Foundation’s annual grantmaking is devoted to support for brain tumor research, through two competitive, peer-reviewed application processes:
- The Brain Tumor Research Awards Program invites proposals from scientists in not-for-profit academic, medical and research institutions in the United States, Canada and Israel. We seek the most promising, innovative and novel research strategies that will translate into improved outcomes for brain tumor patients. To date, we awarded 11.5 million to forty five (45) outstanding investigators with one-year and three-year grants.
- The Brain Tumor Funders Collaborative (BTFC) combines the resources of eight different foundations and public charities to fund multi-specialty, international collaboratives of scientists and clinicians in the search for new therapies for this devastating disease. The first funding initiative of the BTFC began in 2006, with support for three long-term projects.
Beginning in 2006, the Board of the Goldhirsh Foundation has invited project proposals from various social entrepreneurial ventures. These investments are made at the initiative of the Foundation; we do not accept unsolicited applications. In addition, the Foundation supports social and educational programs that reflect the commitments of the Goldhirsh family, also at the Board’s initiative. |
